Wonderfruit Festival, Thailand’s pioneering sustainable, eco-friendly, cross-cultural live celebration of art, music and life, today announces its return for 2016 with a stellar music line up and a ground-breaking announcement about its carbon emissions policy. Where barefoot luxury meets awe-inspiring architecture and natural adventures, Wonderfruit is far from your average music festival and wonderers from all over the world are invited to return to the beautiful Thai countryside for the ultimate destination retreat from 15-18th December 2016. Tickets are on sale now.
Today, Scratch First, the organisers behind Wonderfruit make their first line up announcements, including platinum selling, Brit award winners RUDIMENTAL and Mercury Prize-winning hip hop three-piece, YOUNG FATHERS. Joining them will be JUNUN FEATURING SHYE BEN TZUR & THE RAJASTHAN EXPRESS, WOLF + LAMB and KATE SIMKO & the LONDON ELECTRONIC ORCHESTRA, plus MAD PROFESSOR, MATADOR, AND NASTIA. The bill also features a host of local acts including RASMEE ISAAN SOUL, ZERO HERO, YENA, SRIRAJAH ROCKERS, THE SUPERGLASSES SKA ENSEMBLE and DJ DRAGON.
Speaking of Wonderfruit, RUDIMENTAL said: “We’ve played festivals all over the world but never in Thailand. Wonderfruit sounds like an incredible party and holiday all in one – we can’t wait to go… Shout out to the organisers for pledging to be carbon neutral too.”
Spanning the musical spectrum from live electro outfits and cutting-edge techno DJs to alternative hip hop and world rhythms performed by a diverse selection of bands, orchestras and live acts, Wonderfruit will confirm more acts for 2016 in the coming months.
Wonderfruit also sees jaw-dropping installations and architectural engineering bring the festival to life, with works from some of the world’s greatest sculptors and engineers taking centre stage and using innovative, eco-friendly techniques to realise their conceptions. Wonderfruit encourages audiences to expect the unexpected, with bamboo, fishing nets and even rice used as materials to form sculptures, stages and hubs of activity. New for 2016, artistic wonders include the Farm Stage. Inspired by ceremonial architecture, this creation is from the minds of PO-D Architects and Thor Kaichon and will be entirely built and covered with harvested rice, as a celebration of Thailand’s traditional farming culture. The British Council (Thailand) will use Wonderfruit as the setting for a collaborative arts and crafts project that sees British and Thai artists creating an installation to which Wonderers will be invited to contribute on site. Meanwhile, local arts are further celebrated with Nang Sakun Talung Dharma, a shadow puppet performance from Thailand’s youngest proponent of the art form.
The journey from farm to feasts begins at Wonderfruit’s on-site farm, at the heart of the field and surrounding the Farm Stage. Here, Wonderers can experience rice farming and workshops, sample local delicacies and discover contemporary, horticulture-related art. Delicious dishes will be on offer across the field and Wonderfruit is pleased to announce the return of Rocketfruit and Straight Outta Thonglor.
The wellness programme this year provides the perfect opportunity to get realigned and balanced, with two world-renowned yogis: international Ashtanga master Danny Paradise and Anastasis – a Hatha yoga master from Greece. Wonderers will be able to get active in the gorgeous setting with natural adventures including biking with Life Cycling.
Workshops include the chance to learn the basics of Muay Thai with legendary championship boxer, Buakaw as well as delicate skills from floral artist, Sakul Intakul. Meanwhile, announcements for this year’s Scratch Talks speakers kick off with the team from Trash Hero as well as Todd Lemons from InfiniteEARTH and Alan Laubsch, founder of the Natural Capital Alliance (NCA).
With many more acts, artists, activities and culinary offerings still to be announced, guests of previous iterations of Wonderfruit will be delighted to see the return of fashion and design areas A Taste of Wonder and Wonder Salon, wellness zones The Healing Village and the ultimate kids’ club, Camp Wonder – packed with activities and adventures for families.
Wonderfruit takes place from 15 to 18 December in The Fields at Siam Country Club, Pattaya, just 150 kilometers (two hours’ drive) southeast of Bangkok. First wave ticket pricing begins at 4,800 baht for an adult 4-day pass, which includes general camping. Luxurious boutique and RV camping is available for booking and hotel packages are also available with partner properties in Pattaya.
